If you had told me at the start of this season that the 49ers and Chiefs would be in the Super Bowl, I'd have said that makes a lot of sense. The 49ers are always good. I felt like they were either the best team or maybe second to the Eagles in the NFC. The Chiefs had just won a Super Bowl, so why not believe they could play in the next one?
If you had told me at the start of the playoffs this season that these two teams would be in the Super Bowl, I'd have believed you were half right. The 49ers had the number 1 seed, the Eagles were in the tank, and the Cowboys were often getting spanked on the road. On the other hand, the Chiefs were losing to good teams mostly because their receivers couldn't catch a cold much less a football. The Raiders beat them in Kansas City on Christmas, and they finished the season in 3rd place in the AFC with the prospect of having to win on the road at Buffalo AND Baltimore. Nobody's going to do that. Nobody. But then, it happened. Even though I picked against them in Buffalo and in Baltimore, the Chiefs started playing very well. Their receivers starting catching every pass, the defense continued playing great, and Patrick Mahomes did some Patrick Mahomes things. So, here we are.
Here's how I see it going.
It should be a great game. The 49ers are sick and tired of losing to the Chiefs. It's happened all three times the teams have played since Mahomes became the starting quarterback. I think the 49ers will come out strongly and take an early lead. If they can put the first two touchdowns on the board, they will likely win because the Chiefs are not built to be a big come from behind team this year. They just don't have the downfield receivers. However, all of a sudden, the Chiefs have a ton of confidence. Their defense believes they can shut anyone down, especially in the second half. It's my experience that when a team wins two games on the road in the playoffs that they are not supposed to win, they usually finish it off with a Super Bowl win. That's what I think will happen...
